How to calculate BMI and interpret the result
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a number obtained from a person's weight and height. It is used as a general reference to indicate if someone is below, within, or above the weight considered adequate for their height.
Despite being a simple indicator, it is widely used in initial health assessments and in gyms, clinics, and check-ups.
How to calculate BMI
The BMI formula is simple:
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) x height (m))
For example, a person weighing 70 kg and 1.70 m tall would have:
BMI = 70 / (1.70 x 1.70) ≈ 24.22
Using Utilo BMI calculator
- Access the BMI Calculator tool.
- Enter your weight in kilograms (kg).
- Enter your height in meters (for example, 1.75).
- Click Calculate BMI.
The tool will show the numerical result and which range it falls into.
Classification ranges (general reference)
- Below 18.5: underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9: normal weight
- 25 to 29.9: overweight
- 30 to 34.9: obesity grade I
- 35 to 39.9: obesity grade II
- 40 or more: obesity grade III
Remember: BMI is just a reference. Very muscular people may have a high BMI without being overweight. For any health decision, always consult a professional.
